Diego jugó un estilo muy personal de la guitarra flamenca. Se refirió a ella como "Toca gitano" (para jugar gitana). Es un estilo en parte heredados de guitarristas como Pepe Naranjo, Ramón Montoya, Pepe Mesa, y Niño Ricardo y al que añadió su propio sello ( 'sello propio'). Se caracteriza por un fuerte ritmo, los acentos fuertes, subestimación, saboreando las notas, haciendo hincapié en la expresión en lugar de la velocidad técnica, y la devoción al acompañamiento del cante.
